Austin, Texas- Latinas Unidas Por El Arte (LUPE Arte) has partnered with Girl Scouts of Central Texas to offer a Summer Dance Workshop Series for an interest group of young girls in East Austin.

Approximately 30 girls ranging from 8 to 13 years of age will have the opportunity to sample several dance styles, free of cost, and to perform for their parents at the end of the course.

The idea to collaborate came to Violet Leos, Community Services Director, after attending the final presentations in dance, theatre, and film at LUPE Arte’s Leadership and Career Seminar in March of this year.   Inspired, she contacted LUPE Arte and, together, they formulated the series that offers five weekly dance classes to two groups of girls.

“We are very proud to be working for the first of what will be many times, I hope, with an organization such as the Girl Scouts of Central Texas. And to have our Dance Seminar 2008 instructor available to teach the Dance Workshop Series is certainly a good omen”, said LUPE Arte Executive Director, Marita De La Torre.

Priya Sircar, who taught LUPE Arte’s 2008 Leadership and Career Arts Seminar in dance, began classes on June 25th.  An experienced dancer and choreographer, Sircar will guide the girls in the basic elements of Ballet, Jazz and Hip Hop.

Students will end the series by performing for their parents on Wednesday, July 30th, and Thursday, July 31st, at the Pan-American and Metz Recreation Centers, respectively.
